my correspondent in bolivia tells me that some crazy shit (though not so crazy for bolivia, he says) went down over the weekend with the la paz teachers' union. teachers in bolivia have been on strike for about a month over pay and other issues, but for the la paz educators, the privatization of social security was the last straw. they kidnapped the vice minister for education, celestino choque, and held him until they reached an agreement. however, the government now claims that due to the conditions under which the agreement was signed, it is not valid.
