the incredibles and NCLB: everything connects
well, at least this time it wasn't i who made the connection; it was slate's movie reviewer david edelstein and his readers (scroll down).
it's true that the message of iron giant was accepting people who are different, but i don't think the message of the incredibles was that you need to fit in. it's pretty obvious to me that [spoiler ahead] the "incredibles" can only save the world once they tap into the things that make them different.
and what are the superpowers that make them different?
the hyper little boy's: being able to run really really fast
the angstfully shy teenager's: being able to disappear
the dad's: being really strong
the mom's: being flexible (in a way that often accomodates her family's needs)
i loved that dancing sheep
UPDATE: edelstein has posted more comments on the incredibles and affirmative action issue. my favorite is the one that manages to make a pitch for homeschooling.
