omnibus/rally update: the omnibus spending bill was passed this afternoon. but, as the senator said, "don't bet on vouchers coming to d.c." sen. durbin and some d.c. councilpeople and school board members also spoke, along with civil rights activists. the fight is not over.
as i mentioned in my anti-omnibus rant, d.c. has no voting representation in congress, making this such a sneaky move it's unbelievable. the only way the people of d.c., most of whom are against vouchers, can get rid of the program is "to privatize George W. Bush" (another kennedy gem i hadn't heard before).
i left the senate building in which the rally was held, carrying my "public funds for public schools" sign in lime green, and unknowingly walked right into the heart of the march for life. pro-lifers as far as the eye could see. children carrying signs with pictures of aborted fetuses. high school kids who have no idea what it's like to make that kind of choice gaggled together as if they were on a simple field trip. i was walking upstream in this group trying to get back to work ... pretty amazing. pretty disturbing.
