another song with gut-tugging lyrics that i have deep in my head today for some reason - from ben folds five's album whatever and ever amen. selfless, cold, and composed. here's an excerpt guaranteed to tug:

======
Come on baby
Now throw me a right to the chin
Don't just stare like you never cared
I know you did
You just smiled
Like a bank teller
Telling me blankly, have a nice life
======

well, maybe it doesn't tug without the music. actually the music is quite tugging. especially for me. what an amazing song. because there are few things more hurtful than someone you once loved and cared deeply for acting like it didn't mean anything. i've had that experience, and i'm guilty of doing it to others.

that's why it hurts so much when someone you've just gone through a breakup with gets with someone else. it makes you feel like the relationship is cheapened. then you have the dissonance of feeling like, was it always that cheap? (or "light," as in kundera?) wasn't it heavier than that? i guess it wasn't. that hurts.
